Since the introduction of nursing ratio legislation in California, seven states have enacted legislation that calls for staffing systems based on the individual needs and arrival patterns of patients, developed by teams made up of a significant percentage of direct caring professionals. Nevada’s legislature overrode the Governor’s veto in June 2009 to adopt safe staffing legislation. Nevada joins the ranks of six other states requiring staffing plans – CT, IL, OH, OR, TX, WA. Currently ratio legislation and staffing plan legislation has been proposed at the federal level.
